I know my blog’s name is A Simple Life and for the majority of the time that is how I would describe my life.  There are times, however, when I need to live the good life.  This story is about one of those times.

I live within a mile of The Venue at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana. For those of you not familiar with the Venue, it is a theater where they hold concerts, comedy shows and many other forms of entertainment. The close proximity to Chicago (within 1 mile of the Chicago,Illinois border) allows them to book top of the line entertainment.  My daughter and I love stand up comedy very much.  Our favorite comedian is Lisa Lampanelli.  As my daughter’s luck would have it, Lisa was scheduled to perform at the Venue one week before my daughter turned 21.  Since the Venue is part of the casino you have to be 21 to see a show there.  To ease her disappointment, I promised to take her to the first show she wanted to go to after she turned 21.   In December we found out that Gabriel Iglesias, another of our favorite comedians, was coming to the Venue on March 8th.  As luck would have it my daughter would be home from college for spring break.  December was a busy month for us and by the time I went to order the tickets in January the good seats were gone.  There was, however, seats in the front row of a suite.  The difference in ticket price was minimal so I thought why not this is for my daughter after all.

I splurged and bought the front row suite tickets.  These tickets included a small buffet dinner and drinks.  My daughter was so excited to not only be going to a show but also to be sitting in a suite.  The day of the performance my daughter was like a kid on Christmas.  When we arrived at the theater we were to go upstairs for the suites.  We had to get special bracelets from security to allow us free access to the floor.  Once in our suite we were pleased by the coziness of it all. Our buffet included nacho chips with salsa and ranch dip, a gourmet fruit tray, tomato bruschetta, beef empanadas and churros.   We read on the website that beer, wine and soft drinks were included.  We were nicely surprised to find that mixed drinks were also included.  I do not like beer or wine, but I can’t pass up a good mixed drink.  I ordered vodka and diet pepsi and my daughter had a drink made with vodka, orange juice, cranberry juice, pineapple juice and cherry juice.

The opening acts were all pretty good.  We did especially love Rick Guitierrez and his stand up routine.  His famous line is “I am not mad. I am a parent.”  Gabriel Iglesias put on a totally awesome show.  He told the story of how he didn’t know if he would get asked back to the Horseshoe since the last time he was there he ended up drunk by the end of the show.  This time he did not drink while he was on stage.  His comedy left us crying we were laughing so hard.  He put on a two-hour show that was great from start to finish.  The look of pure pleasure on my daughter’s face made the price I paid for the tickets well worth it.  I know that sometimes you need to live a little and just have fun.

I found out this week that Lisa Lampanelli is coming to Joliet, Illinois on May 4th.  My daughter is in luck.  She is coming home from college the day before.  We are definitely going to the show.  Although this time we will be sitting in regular seats instead of a suite.  Ron White, another of our favorite comedians is coming to the Venue on September 14th. Who knows maybe I will spring for suite tickets again.  Stay tuned…
